'I got a letter saying you are my tax agent? Why?'

To deal with the IRD on your behalf, we need to be your 'tax agent' to ensure we get your school rebate right (this doesn't mean we will be doing your income tax returns and taking a % of them). Once we return your refund we don't need to be your tax agent. We want to treat you like a fellow parent not like your tax agent so let us know if you have any queries or concerns.

How long will it take?

Provided we have all your information we will process your rebate application within two working days. IRD will assess the application and can take anywhere from 3 days to 6 weeks. Once we receive your rebate to our trust account, we pay to your nominated bank account within 3 days.

In some cases IRD may need you to file an IR3 tax return before releasing your refund. This will delay your refund - unfortunately this is outside of our control. Should this happen we'll let you know and work with you on your options.

I've already claimed on other donations?

Thats fine. Maybe you've claimed on some other forms of donations and didn't realise you could claim your school donations. We can sort this for you with the IRD.
Start your claim by clicking the box on the left of this page.

What do I need?

To meet IRD requirements you need to tell us:

  • Your name
  • IRD number
  • ID details (Drivers licence or Passport)
  • Bank account number for your refund
  • Copies of donation receipts (don't worry if you don't have these, you can request these from your school from our website)

Finally, to be eligible for a donation rebate you must be a New Zealand tax resident and have earned income in the years you are claiming for.

What if I pay to the Auckland Kindergarten Association?

Donations to the AKA can be claimed back. If you have a receipt for these payments, you can upload it to our website via the 'Start your claim' page.

Don't have your receipts? Let us know via e-mail at and we will help you out.

I don't have my donation receipt(s)?

We'll get them for you!

After the 'Start your Claim' section you'll have the option to request your receipts from your school(s). We receive them from your school and process your claim  with the IRD.

Can I claim a rebate from prior years?

Yes! The IRD will allow a claim for the current tax year and four previous years: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. If you don't have copies of your receipts going back that far, don't worry - use our Request Receipts function to get your school to email copies to us.

Can I claim a rebate on other donation types?

Yes! We process all donation rebate types including donations to registered charities (e.g. Cancer Society, Red Cross, World Vision etc) and donations to religious organisations (your Church). Simply include these amounts with your school donations and provide us with copies of the receipts.

Is this too good to be true?

No. People have been claiming donation rebates from IRD for years. But for most salary and wage earners the PAYE system is so accurate, they no longer need to file a tax return. That means donations are left unclaimed. In other cases, people just don't know they can claim or don't want the hassle of dealing with IRD. We do all that for you.

Are all school fees able to be claimed as a donation rebate?

No. Only the ‘Donation’ portion of your school fee’s are eligible. The receipt from your school must show the word "donation" on it.

Below is an exerpt from the IRD:

You can claim a donation tax credit on:

  • school fees or
  • state run kindergartens

As long as they go to the general fund and you have a receipt with the word 'donation' written on it.

You can't claim a donation tax credit on:

  • attendance due fees
  • tuition fees, ie where a separate fee is charged for any course of tuition
  • university, polytech or other tertiary education fees
  • private kindergarten or other early childcare fees.

My donation was only small, is it worth it?

Of course - and remember you can claim for the four previous years if you haven't already.  It all adds up and at the end of the day, it's your money. We'll do all the work for you so it makes it easy.

Does the school pay 33% of the money back?

No. Your school still receives 100% of your donation. Each year the Government allocates an amount for tax credits (rebates) in the Budget. For the 2014/15 year the Government forecast $247m of tax credits.

What do the schools think?

The schools we've talked to are happy there's an easy way for parents to claim back what they're entitled to. They've been telling parents for years but parents weren't too sure what to do from there.

What does it cost?

Less than the value of your time that can be better spent with your children - this is about making it easy for you.

We charge 15% (excluding GST) of your total gross rebate. Our fee is deducted from your refund and we pay the balance of your rebate to your nominated bank account.

As an example, lets say your total donations are $100. You are entitled to $33 back (per NZ law) and we charge a fee of $5.69 (15% plus gst) which comes out of the $33 you are entitled to.
